Meet Laura: Enjoys paychecks

Hello!  Welcome to the Get Real blog by 1st Financial Federal Credit Union.

There are just a few things you need to know about me before we become friends.  First, I started as a teller in a credit union a long long time ago in a faraway land while I finished college.  I immediately fell in love with the credit union mission and purpose and philosophy and also, I enjoyed having a paycheck.  It’s cool when you can get paid from an organization you actually kind of like.

Over the years that “like” and admiration for a paycheck, has grown into a mild obsession.  Not for the paycheck, although I will admit, paychecks are great.  I am pretty nuts for credit unions.  It sounds so lame.  I’m like that uncle of yours who is too excited about anime or model trains (I actually happen to think model trains are cool, but anime doesn’t move me at all).  You tolerate your uncle even though you don’t really get it.  Most people feel that way about where they bank.  We tolerate it, but we really don’t get it.

I’m hoping to change that.

Why, you ask?  Because credit unions are not for profit banking cooperatives.  That means the people who bank here, own it.  We don’t make profits on the backs of people. We aim to serve the cooperative first and foremost.  Our board of directors are volunteers and every single person who banks here gets to use their voice to direct how the credit union operates.  I happen to think that’s pretty awesome.

But mostly, I’m passionate about the work we do in the community.  I’m going to be writing a lot about the need for financial institutions like 1st Financial to serve our communities in new and innovative ways.  I’m also going to be writing a lot about personal finance.  I’m a working mom who has seen it all.  I’ve seen our members be really creative and resilient in the face of great struggle and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned after 12 years in the financial industry.

I am looking forward to what’s next.  Stay tuned!
